Top 100+ Creative Chicken Names
Are you welcoming new chickens to your flock? Half the fun of new chickens is picking out some great names for your feathered friends. Here is a list of over 100 solid chicken names to get you started.
Our Flock
We maintain a flock of around thirty laying hens with a few roosters thrown in the mix. Honestly, with so many chickens we typically don’t name the hens.
There are just too many that look alike. They also free-range which means we don’t spend much time with them except to check on them at night when we close up the coop.
Still, every once in a while we have a hen that gets sick, or there is one the kids take a particular liking to, and she will be bequeathed a name.
When the kids name them they usually get interesting ones like “Midnight Thunder Storm”, “Blackie”, “Poopsa-Lot”, etc. These are great and honestly some of my favorite chicken names.
You might want to have more of a plan when it comes to naming your girls.
Here are my top names for your flock of happy chickens.

Rooster Names
Let’s not leave out our handsome boys! You are likely to have far fewer
roosters than hens, but a good name is still important. Male chicken names
can be just as fun and creative as names for the girls.
A word of caution with roosters though, keep in mind you might be saying
this name out loud in your yard within hearing distance of your neighbors.
It might sound funny (and in fact BE funny) but you might not want to be
yelling out names that sound like a porn star when your neighbor’s kids are
out playing in the yard.
– Foghorn Leghorn
– HeiHei
– Elvis
– Rooster Cogburn
– Scrooge McCluck
– Basil
– Bertram
– Cluck Norris
– Gregory Peck
Things to Help Pick the Right Name
If you just can’t decide what to name your chicken, using the ideas above,
here are a few things you might consider to get you to the right choice.
Color
This is usually the way my kids decide to name things and it can be a
useful starting point if you are stumped. A black chicken might be
“Pepper”, “Hensday Addams”, “Cocoa”, or “Eggplant”.
You could also go the opposite and name a black chicken things like
“Snowdrop”.
Attitude and Personality
Is your chicken sweet? Maybe pick a name like “Sweet Pea”, “Honey”,
“Chamomile”, or “Cupcake.
Is your chicken real sassy? Think about something like “Pepper”, “Spicey”,
“Cholula” or “Lady Featherington”.
Get to know your chicken’s personality and choose a name that seems fitting
to who they are as a creature.
Your Family
Another great place to get inspiration for creative names is your own
family and friends.
When we moved to our homestead, my father-in-law was out doing something in
the backyard when he discovered a Rhode Island red hen hiding in the bushes
near a tree.
We only had baby chicks that were a few weeks old at that point so she
stuck out very obviously in the coop. We named her “Brian” after my
father-in-law.
Naming them after your spouse, in-laws, family friends, whoever, can be a
fun and great way to get perfect chicken names.
This is especially fun if you use their first AND last name. We once had a
goat named “Brent Nelson” after a friend of my husband’s. You are
guaranteed to have a unique name when giving them a first and last.
