Cinnamon Oat Waffles
Waffles are possibly my favorite breakfast food. Unfortunately they are often only filling for an hour or two. This recipe for cinnamon oat waffles is packed with protein to keep your belly satisfied until lunch time.

Every blogger’s recipe needs a story right? This particular recipe comes from my mom’s side of the family. Many years ago a friend of my sister was getting married. As a gift, my mom and sister sat down and went through all our family favorite recipe cards to compile a cookbook for her. It was nothing fancy, just typed up recipes thrown in laminated sheets and put in a three ring binder. We made extra copies for my sister and me.
This recipe for cinnamon oat waffles has been tucked away in that binder for years.
It’s simple, delicious, and with ingredients like eggs, milk, and oats, it is a great protein boost.
What Makes a Good Waffle
A good waffle should be tender on the inside and crispy on the outside. The key to the crisp is an oil or other fat.
This is why I recommend using an oil on the waffle iron. It both keeps the waffles from sticking and creates a perfect crisp exterior.
Some good options are coconut, olive, or even avocado oil.
Adding Extra Protein to Waffles
Let’s face it, waffles are a big ol’ carb festival that taste good in the moment, but often leave you hungry sooner than you’d like. There are a few ingredients in this waffle recipe that help boost the protein.
Eggs are a great source of protein and, if free range, omega 3’s.
Milk is another great source of protein and calcium.
Oats contain more protein than most grains and are a good source of complex carbohydrates. They also are a great way to get in your fiber.

How to Make Cinnamon Oat Waffles
Preheat your waffle iron. We have an old fashioned iron that you heat up on the stove so I start this process early.
Melt the butter in the microwave or stove. If you are using regular oats and not quick oats, pour the hot butter over the oats and stir. Add in the brown sugar. The warm butter will help the oats to break down and cook more quickly. You can do the same steps with quick oats, or just mix them in with the dry ingredients. You will still need to melt the butter either way.
In a medium sized bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and cinnamon.
Add the eggs o the butter/oat mixture, thoroughly stirring them in one at a time. Whisk in the milk.
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and give it a good mix until you are lump free (minus the oats of course).
Use a basting brush to apply oil to the top and bottom of the waffle iron or spray them with cooking spray.
Take about a 3/4 scoop of batter and plop it in the iron. Cook until your iron tells you it is done, or if you’ve got an old fashioned situation give it a flip after about a minute and a half.
Serve warm and crunchy.
Toppings to Serve with Waffles
Of course the classic topping for waffles is plain good old maple syrup. We are lucky in Minnesota that there are maple syrup stands dotted around the countryside. We even live down the road from the North American Maple Council’s First Place winner for best syrup.
Other great toppings for waffles include:
- Strawberries
- Blueberries
- Raspberries
- Whipped Cream
- Peanut Butter
- Cream Cheese
- Chocolate Chips
- Chicken (if you’re into that sort of thing)
